New Delhi:
The 240-member newly elected Tamil Nadu Assembly which will
see 63-year old AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa as the Chief
Minister, will have just 5 Muslim MLAs - two short of the number
in the last assembly.
Among the winners are TMMK chief and
active Muslim community leader Prof MH Jawahirullah, who has won
the Ramanathapuram assembly seat by defeating Congress candidate
and AIADMK leaders Abdul Raheem and A. Mohammed John.
Other Muslim candidates who have won
the elections inculde T.P.M. Mohideen Khan of DMK and Aslam Basha
A of TMMK.
In the 2006 elections, seven Muslim
candidates had made to the state assembly.
The elections for the 240-Tamil Nadu
assembly elections were held in April/May this year. AIADMK
alliance led by J Jayalalitha has convincingly defeated the DMK
alliance by winning 150 seats - a gain of 89 seats as compared to
the 2006 elections.
Karunanidhi led ruling DMK, which
was facing the corruption charges could win just 23 seats. It had
96 seats in the last assembly.
