New Delhi: Apparently
upset with Law Minister Salman Khurshid for saying that his
ministry had administrative control over the constitutional body,
Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi has complained to Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh, said sources.
Sources said that Quraishi is upset over his authority being
undermined by the minister's statement.
However, Quraishi dismissed the suggestion that there was anything
personal between him and Khurshid. "It is a very ridiculous idea.
We are friends otherwise, personally. It is just an institutional
issue," Quraishi told a news channel.
Khurshid recently said to a TV news channel that the law ministry
has control over the Election Commission as it signs documents
related to travel of the Election Commissioners.
The EC had Tuesday served show cause notice on the minister for
promising while campaigning for his wife Louise in Farrukhabad on
Sunday that nine percent sub-quota would be allocated for
minorities in Uttar Pradesh if the Congress was voted to power.
The EC also stayed implementation of 4.5 per cent quota for
minorities in the five poll-bound states.
