NCP declares truce, alliance to have more 'coordination'

New Delhi:
Declaring a truce with alliance partner Congress, the NCP
Wednesday said a mechanism is being evolved to ensure more
consultation between allies for "cohesive functioning" of the
government.
Talking to reporters after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief
Sharad Pawar met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi,
party leader Praful Patel said the meeting had put a "full stop"
to all differences that emerged in the last few days.
"This puts a full stop to whatever happened in last few days,"
Patel said Wednesday.
Patel, who was also present in the meeting, said it was decided in
the that the allies would meet at least once a month "to discuss
policies and other issues".
"After deliberations, it was decided to set up an effective
coordination mechanism very soon to ensure cohesive functioning of
the UPA (United Progressive Alliance). This mechanism will ensure
that UPA allies meet at least once a month to discuss policy and
other issues," he said, reading out a statement signed by Congress
President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
"It was decided to activate the coordination machinery very soon
to ensure the smooth functioning of the Congress-NCP coalition
government in Maharashtra," he said.
This announcement comes as a total retreat from the tough stand
taken by the NCP last week after Pawar wrote to the prime minister
and Congress president giving a list of NCP's grievances.
Pawar and Patel had skipped the last cabinet meeting and were also
not attending their offices.
The two allies had been going through a rough patch with NCP
reportedly being upset about not being given due importance in the
alliance.
According to reports, a threat to leave the alliance was also
issued.
Patel had, however, denied this. He said the NCP would be a part
of UPA till 2014.
After the truce, Patel said he and Pawar would return to their
offices and that there were "fully active in the government".
"Sharad Pawarji and I are fully active in government proceedings
and will continue to do so. There is no reason to doubt this," he
said, responding to a query.
Pawar is the union agriculture minister and Patel the union heavy
industries minister.
