Mumbai:
Haj Committee of India on Wednesday declared the quota of Haj
pilgrims for different states and Union Territories calculated based on the total
population of the respective states and percentage of the Muslim
population.
As per the details put on the Haj
Committee of India website, Uttar Pradesh has been allotted a
quota of 25359 Haj pilgrims - a maximum in the list of 30 Indian
states and Union Territories.
Uttar Pradesh is followed by West
Bengal and Bihar - the two states which are allotted a quota of
16698 and 11320 respectively.
Maharashtra has been allotted a
quota of 8473 hajis whereas Goa has been allotted a quota of 76
hajis - the minimum in the list of the states.
In Union Territories, Delhi topped
the list with a quota of 1339 hajis whereas Dadara Nagar Haveli is
allotted a quota of 05 hajis.
The statewise quota is calculated
based on the total population of the states and Union Territories
and the percentage of the Muslims.
The Haj Committee of India has
declared the quota for a total of 1,14,000 hajis for which it has
received a total of 3,11,000 applications from the entire country.
Of the total 1,25,000 hajis who go to hajj every year through Hajj
Committee of India, 11,000 are reserved with the government.
The categories among which the 11,000 seats are distributed are
Khadim-ul-Hujjaj, Mehram (women), Bohras, pilgrims from Jammu and
Kashmir and Lakshadweep, states/union territories with Haj
applications in excess of the quota, the Haj Committee of India
and the central government.
The government of India has also
requested the government of Saudi Arabia to increase the total
quota of the Indian hajis.
