Haryana university student alleges gang-rape

Friday May 18, 2012 08:06:26 PM, IANS

Chandigarh: A first-year girl student of law at Haryana's all-women university, Bhagat Phool Singh Women's University, near Sonipat town has been hospitalised after alleged gang-rape by four youths, police said Friday.

The police registered a case of gang-rape Friday against the youths whom the girl named in her complaint. The girl resides in one of the girls' hostel on the campus.

In her complaint to the police, the girl alleged that she was dragged into a Scorpio SUV driven by a youth, Amit, who runs a canteen on the university campus, and his accomplices Wednesday afternoon while she was returning from the local market.

She said she was gang-raped by four youths in the vehicle till Thursday. She was later dumped near the university gate Thursday evening.

The incident was brought to the notice of university vice chancellor Pankaj Mittal, who has promised a thorough probe and action.

Hundreds of students of the university Friday blocked traffic on the Sonipat-Gohana highway demanding immediate arrest and stern action against the gang-rape accused.

Police officials said the victim has been admitted to a hospital and her medical examination has confirmed rape.

The university, the first all-women university in the state, is located at Khanpur village in Sonipat district, 180 km from Chandigarh.
