Mumbai:
A software professional has been picked for an American leadership
programme that emphasizes the importance of pluralism, tolerance
and volunteerism as components of civic life in the US.
Aamir Idrisi, 31, is president of the Association of Muslim
Professionals (AMP). He is selected
for the 22-day programme in which representatives from 40
countries have been chosen.
US is regularly selecting people
from different professions including Indian Muslims for such
leadership programs.
"This programme will allow me to interact with people from the
government and NGOs across the US and others from different
countries. It will give me a chance to project India in a much
better light and provide an opportunity to share and learn,"
Idrisi told IANS.
Entitled "American Youth: Inspiring Leadership and Civic
Engagement", the programme's goal is to examine the concepts of
democracy, government and citizenship and their importance in the
US civil society.
The program would help participants identify skills to groom
future leaders.
Starting with Washington, the program will continue in Maryland,
New York, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Utah and Oregon.
Besides Idrisi, there are three other Muslims from some other
countries who are scheduled to meet prominent Muslims and Muslim
groups working in the US.
The AMP, spread across 12 Indian states, is an independent,
intellectual body providing a platform for Muslim professionals to
share knowledge, experience and skills.
