The government of Maharashtra on Friday appointed Justice Shrikant
Malte to head the single member Judicial Enquiry Commission to
probe the January 06 communal violence which claimed 06 lives
besides injuring more than 40 others.
Justice Malte is a retired high
court judge. His appointment to head the single member judicial
enquiry commission came exactly two months after Chief Minister
Prithviraj Chavan's announcement to form the commission to probe
the communal violence which broke out in this North Maharashtra city
over a trivial issue of non-payment of a food bill.
According to the notification issued
by the government on Friday, Justice Shrikant Malte has been
requested to submit his report in three months time.
The notification says, Justice Malte
has been requested to probe if the district administration and the
local police department effectively handled the situation arising
out of the violence. It has also been requested to probe whether
the police firing was necessary.
