New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have congratulated Indian tennis player Sania Mirza Saturday for winning the US Open mixed doubles title with Brazilian partner Bruno Soares.
A message from the President on his official Twitter handle said, "#PresidentMukherjee congratulates Sania Mirza on winning the US Open Mixed Doubles, says she has done India proud through this achievement."
Prime Minister Modi in his message sent to the ace tennis player said, "Congratulations to Sania Mirza for the victory in the US Open Mixed Doubles Finals. We are very proud of the achievement."
The prime minister also congratulated Japanese tennis player Kei Nishikori for making it to the US Open Finals.
"Good news from the US Open continued with Kei Nishikori's exemplary win! My best wishes to this young sportsman for the Final," Modi said.
Top seeds Sania and Soares defeated American-Mexican pairing of Abigail Spears and Santiago Gonzalez 6-1, 2-6, 11-9 to win the title at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York Friday.
Sania later replied to the tweets, thanking the president and the prime minister.
"@RashtrapatiBhvn thank you so much Sir..," tweeted Sania.
Retweeting the prime minister's tweet, she thanked him.
"Thank you very much sir...Look forward to meeting you at your convenience in the near future," she said.
The Indian tennis star had also won the 2009 Australian Open and 2012 French Open mixed doubles titles with Mahesh Bhupathi.
