Makkah:
Sheikh Muhammad Siraj Maaroof, one of the senior Muezzins (person who calls for prayer) at the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, passed away on Friday after a prolonged illness, local media reported.

He was buried at Al-Muallah Cemetery in Makkah after funeral prayers were performed at the Masjid al-Haram following the Fajr (dawn) prayer on Saturday.

Condolences were received at Sheikh Maaroof’s family house in Al-Subhani district of the holy city after the Maghreb (sunset) prayer Saturday.

Ali Mullah, Chief Muezzin of the Makkah Grand Mosque, expressed deep sorrow over the death of his colleague.

“Sheikh Maaroof was one of the oldest Muezzins in the Grand Mosque. He had inherited this noble profession from his father and grandfathers", he said.

"His family was among the oldest families that contributed Muezzins to the Grand Mosque for long period", he added.

Mullah said Sheikh Maaroof had been suffering from lung disease.
