New Delhi: Renowned Islamic scholar, writer and a Member of Parliament from Bihar’s Kishanganj constituency, Maulana Asrar-ul-Haque Qasmi, passed away in the early hours of Friday following a heart attack. He was 76 and is survived by two sons and three daughters.

His funeral will be held in Kishanganj later in the evening Friday or early Saturday morning, family sources said. "A final time is yet to be decided", they said.

Maulana Asrarul Haque Qasmi won the Kishanganj seat in 2009 general elections by contesting on Congress ticket after five consecutive failures. He retained his constituency in the 2014 general elections by defeating BJP’s Dilip Kumar Jaiswal, that too, with a margin of over 1 lakh votes. Moreover, he was the only MP Congress won in Bihar in the 2014 general election.

Maulana Qasmi was the former state president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hindi and member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board. He was also a prolific writer and his articles were published by a number of leading newspapers and magazines of Urdu language. His in depth analysis on current issues used to be full of useful data and key facts. He was also vocal on Muslim issues.

However, he faced rare wrath of the Muslim community because of his absence from the Parliament during the debate on Triple Talaq bill. He said he was held up in traffic and could not reach the Parliament in time. But, critics alleged that the Congress leadership had barred him from participating in the debate.

Meanwhile, condolences poured in from different circles over the sad demise of Maulama Qasmi.

In his condolence message issued through his close aide Bhola Yadav RJD president Lalu Prasad said in Bihar has lost an able and dedicated MP. Congress president Rahul Gandhi and party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala also condoled the demise of party MP.

"My deepest condolences on the passing away of veteran Congress leader and MP Mohammad Asrarul Haque Qasmi ji. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and followers and to the people of Kishanganj and beyond", Surjewala wrote.

Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said the country has lost a learned leader. "Qasmi always espoused and fought to preserve secular values", he said.

“I am deeply saddened by the demise of Mohammad Asrarul Haque, a senior Congressman and a popular leader from Kishanganj, Bihar, from where he was elected as Lok Sabha member twice. He was instrumental in setting up Aligarh Muslim University in his constituency,” said Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad.
