MJ Akbar case against Priya Ramani

New Delhi: MJ Akbar, Union Minister of State (MoS) External Affairs, on Monday filed a defamation case against Priya Ramani - the female journalist who was the first to point fingers at the editor-turned-politician accusing him of sexual misconduct.

As many as 09 more females, including journalist and author Ghazala Wahab and CNN reporter Majlie de Puy Kamp, followed Priya Ramani and accused MJ Akbar of behaving in sexually inappropriate manner while he was their boss at Asian Age office in New Delhi.

However, after arriving in India on Sunday, MJ Akbar rubbished all allegations against him as baseless and fabricated, and also made his intentions clear to sue those behind the campaign.

MJ Akbar filed the case against Priya Ramanai in in Delhi’s Patiala House Court through his advocates Karanjawala & Co.

MJ Akbar has accused Ramani of "willfully, deliberately, intentionally and maliciously" defaming him on "wholly and completely false, frivolous, unjustifiable and scandalous grounds".

The sections that Akbar's lawyers have invoked carry a maximum punishment of two years in prison.

Meanwhile, journalist Priya Ramani said she stood by whatever she had claimed in the writeup posted on Facebook about a week ago.

The Congress on the other hand asked Prime Minister Modi if it was his hand behind the defamation suit MJ Akbar has filed against Priya Ramani.

“Is there your hand behind MJ Akbar? We want to ask the PM on which side he stands. Is he with the women or against them. We’ve heard a defamation case has been filed against a journalist. Does the PM support this case?” Congress leader RPN Singh asked.

The Congress said brave women have recounted harrowing experiences and the prime minister refuses to say a thing about this.

“Now the junior minister has filed a defamation case against the accuser journalist and the PM remains silent. The prime minister has to speak up,” Singh said.
