Ahmedabad: Liladhar Vaghela, 83-year-old BJP MP from Patan in Gujarat, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a local hospital after he broke his ribs following an attack by a stray cow Thursday evening.
According to reports, Vaghela was out for a walk when a stray cow attacked him outside his residence in Sector 21, Gandhinagar. He was immediately rushed to Apollo hospital and admitted to the ICU after priliminary examination.
"In addition to his ribs, Vaghela has also sustained injuries on his head", doctors said adding that his condition is stable.
Prior to being elected to the Lok Sabha, Vaghela was a cabinet minister in Gujarat.
Stray cows have become a major issue in various parts of India ever since the BJP came to power in 2014, and cases of violence in the name of cow protection has increased.
Earlier, farmers in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana had complained that stray cows were damaging their crops. There were also reports of cow dying in shelter homes as the caretakers were unable to feed them because of lack of fund.
However, it is probably for the first time that a parliamentarian is attacked by stray cow.
