Fascism and Terrorism: Two sides of the same coin Urdu Press Club

“It seems that the fascist forces with a clear anti-Muslim agenda have infiltrated the security forces. Since the Indian constitution is secular and guarantees equality before law, an anti-Muslim agenda goes against the spirit of the Indian constitution and thereby the Indian nation”, said author, historian and anti-fascist activist Amarish Misra. He was speaking at a discussion on `Fascism and Terrorism: Two sides of the same coin’ organized by the Urdu Press Club at Press Club in New Delhi. The discussion was presided over by A.R. Shaheen, MP and President of the Urdu Press Club.
Delivering the keynote address, Amaresh Misra elaborated on the new phenomenon in Indian politics and discussed at length how fascist forces like the Sangh Parivar, create the bogey of terrorism to gain political mileage. “Of late, in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat and elsewhere extra-constitutional forces seem to be functioning with impunity he said and added, “While innocent Muslim youths are picked up in the name of combating terrorism, people like Raj and Bal Thackeray and Narendra Modi and Lal Krishna Advani who have blatantly violated the law are allowed to get away with murder.”
Accusing parts of the Indian State machinery and parties like the Congress of willfully giving space for extra-constitutional, communal-fascist forces to grow, he wondered, “Otherwise why in Maharashtra when Muslims accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast are given harsh sentences, the Srikrishna Report that goes against Shiv Sainiks has not been implemented so far?”
Observing that the Sangh Parivar is against the spirit of 1857-the first war of Indian Independence, the best example of Hindu-Muslim unity, Misra said, “Before Independence too Sangh Parivar was a British agent and even now it is working as an agent to destabilize the Indian State on the direction of the foreign forces.”
Stating that International forces like America are involved in creating the Muslim as the new enemy of the world and the move clearly seem to be politically motivated, renowned writer and activist, Ms Arundhati Roy observed, “The 70% of America’s economy depends on its defense industry. In such a scenario America needs new enemies and wars to sustain its economy.”
“It is unfortunate”, she said, “American line of thinking is gaining ground in a secular country like India as well.” She warned this as a threat for the Indian democracy. Recalling the Supreme Judgment in the Parliament attack case, she observed, “It looks the judiciary is also falling prey to the fascist-communal logic.”
While stating that the State power is being used to terrorize Muslims, Director of the Urdu Council Ali Jawed questioned the recent terrorist attacks in India. “An impartial enquiry will show that terrorist attacks, including the one on Parliament, might have been stage managed by the fascist forces within the State machinery”, he said. “There is thus collusion; fascist forces create terrorism so that they can further kill democracy and trample civil rights to implement their anti-democratic agenda.”
Provoked by some observations made by Prof. S.A.R. Geelani, the accused in the Parliamentary attack case, who has been acquitted by the Supreme Court, journalist Manoj Raghuvanshi and Surendra Jain, member of V.H.P. National Committee made some comments that created the storm in the gathering and protests started emerging from the assembly, and it became difficult to continue the meeting. But Amaresh Misra took the mike and appealed to people to calm down and condemned Raghuvanshi and Surendra Jain for deliberately provoking the crowd.
Concluding the meeting A.R. Shaheen, MP and President of the Urdu Press Club with a note the Urdu Press Club was created as a platform where diverse viewpoints could be put forward, he said, “The Urdu Press Club is a platform of harmony and brotherhood—but some forces seem hell bent upon maligning it by issuing provocative statements.”
Tariq Faizi said that he too had envisioned the Urdu Press Club as a platform of debate and discussion. “But the intolerance level amongst communal fascist forces is such that they are not ready to listen to any criticism”, he said. He also criticized some Muslim members of the assembly for not acting with tolerance.
