Mumbai: The US is actively engaged with India, which has huge Muslim population, especially targeting the community in the field of health, education, science and technology, American Special Envoy Rashad Hussain said today.

"We are working directly with India targeting Muslim population. In the field of health, we are working in partnership with four countries Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria and India (especially in UP and Bihar's Muslim dominated areas) where polio is endemic," Hussain, the US Special Envoy to the Organisation of Islamic Conference, told reporters here.

"Second is the creation of partnership in many areas and in the area of education we have already achieved 30 per cent increase," he said.

Tremendous progress has been made in areas of positive engagement with Muslims across the globe since Barack Obama took over as US President.

Obama has created a broad comprehensive framework to deal with the Muslims and this engagement and partnerships are in a number of areas including education, entrepreneurship, economic development, science and technology and health, he said.

The problems cannot be solved overnight and there will be obstacles, but "we are optimistic that we will overcome them and bring peace and security to the world," Hussain said.

The Special Envoy met some civil society groups and also interacted with students of Rizvi college at Bandra.

Hussain, who is on a visit to India, was appointed by Obama in February as part of his government's initiative to "deepen and expand its relationship with the Muslim world".

His family has roots in Gorakhpur, Patna and Aligarh and he is a product of Yale Law School. He had served as a Trial Attorney at the US Department of Justice.
