Indian students head for Canada to join research internships
Tuesday, July 13, 2010 08:09:45 AM, ANI
New Delhi: Some of the brightest Indian students will be spending this summer in Canada taking part in cutting-edge research internships at Canadian universities.
According to a Canadian High Commission release, as part of MITACS Globalink internship program, 105 undergraduate Indian students are working on a number of research projects alongside undergraduate and graduate Canadian students under the supervision of Canadian faculty members. In addition, they will receive business skills training through the MITACS Step Program, tour cutting-edge companies and network with industry leaders and innovators.
While 49 students will take up internships at University of British Columbia, University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University in the province of British Columbia, 47 students have joined three-month internship programs at York University, McMaster University, Carleton University, Queen’s University, Ryerson University, University of Western Ontario, University of Waterloo, University of Ottawa, University of Toronto and University of Guelph in the province of Ontario. Nine students have joined University of New Brunswick (UNB) in the province of New Brunswick.
MITACS Globalink is a unique internship program that links talented international undergraduate students with world-class researchers at Canadian universities. The program seeks to build research links with India – a research and development powerhouse in the making – and connect with its future innovators and entrepreneurs.
“Canada has world-class universities that provide superior education and innovative collaborative research opportunities and companies interested in helping students to commercialize their ideas into the products of tomorrow,” said Arvind Gupta, scientific director of MITACS.
Commenting on his internship, Rohit Verma, a computer science student from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, said his time at UNB "has been an enjoyable and enriching experience that [he] will cherish for years to come." He added that working at UNB is refreshing and motivating. (ANI)
