Chennai: At a time when every State in the country was wooing US President Barack Obama to visit their respective States, students of a private school in the city outskirts today launched a signature campaign to invite him to come to Chennai when he visits India later this year.

In a giant banner, spread over 210 ft, all the 4,418 students of Everwin Matriculation Higher Secondary School at suburban Kolathur, braving incessant rains, signed on it.

''We invite US President Barack Obama to visit Chennai'', read the banner, as the students from Class I to XII, started queueing up since morning to ink their signatures in the banner.

''We want Obama to include Chennai in his itinerary, when he visits India in November, accepting the invitation extended by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh,'' the school authorities said.

Obama had last month confirmed that he would visit India in November this year.

The signed banner would be handed over to the US Consul General in the city.
