New Delhi: Eminent linguist Prof Masood Husain Khan has been conferred with Delhi Urdu Academy's highest honour--Kul Hind Bahadur Shah Zafar Award in recognition of his contribution to the study of Urdu Language and literature The Academy also honoured noted Urdu author Dr Khalique Anjum with the Pandit Brijmohan Dattatreya Award.

Both the awards, which carry a cash component of Rs 1,5000, were given away by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at a function here yesterday.

The Academy also awarded Dr Kashmiri Lal Zakir for creative prose, Ms Noorjahan Srawat for poetry and Dr Bano Sartaj for children's literature.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister, who is also chairperson of the Academy, said her Government would give all possible help to the Academy to carry on its task of promoting the Urdu language, which was a great cultural heritage of the country.

''Urdu is a beautiful, sweet language, which should be preserved at all costs,'' she said.

The function was presided over by Delhi Minister for Food and Industries Haroon Yusuf. Minister for Health and Languages Kiran Walia was the guest of honour.
