Karnataka Gram Panchayat polls: SDPI bags 67 seats

Bhopal: The Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI), a new political party, has bagged 67 seats in Karnataka state in the recently concluded Gram Panchayat elections.
According to Abdul Majeed Kodlipet, Karnataka State president of the party, SDPI had contested for 368 seats in the State and has won 67 seats. In Daksina Kannada, the party fielded its candidates for 273 seats out of which it 41. In Udupi district it has claimed 13 seats out of 31. In Coorg, 9 have been won out of 34 seats contested. In Tumkur 3 out of 9 seats have been won besides one seat each in Ramnagar, Hunasur, and Hassan, he revealed.
Abdul Majeed said Bedagotta Panchayat of Kodagu will be administered by an SDPI candidate. In DK too, SDPI backed candidates will play a major role in the administration in many places, he disclosed.
He also informed that a thanksgiving programme for the winning candidates and party workers will be held on May 25 at Town Hall n Mangalore in which National and State leaders are also expected to participate.
It may be recalled here that the SDPI was formed on June 21 last year and a month later it was officially launched on July 29 in New Delhi. Then, on October 18, 2009 the first delegates convention of the party was held in New Delhi wherein the party’s manifesto was released party president E. Abubacker who made the formal declaration of the party. The manifesto has put forth the slogan of “Freedom from Hunger, Freedom from Fear”.
It may be mentioned here that SDPI has been formed to realize a social order and political system based on the Indian Constitutional ideals of justice, equality, liberty and fraternity. The party is working exclusively for the welfare of Minorities, OBCs and other marginalized groups.(pervezbari@eth.net)
