Bhopal: Three National records one in individual event while two in relay races tumbled in the ongoing 38th National Junior Aquatics Championship here at Prakash Taran Pushkar swimming pool on Sunday. Swimmers from Maharashtra dominated the day’s proceedings and clinched five gold medals in different events.

 

A total of12 gold medals were at stake on Sunday and Maharashtra bagged five of them. Tamil Nadu swimmers won 4 yellow metals while Karnataka walked away with 2.Akanksha Vora from Maharashtra created a new National record in 800 meter freestyle in Group II girls’ category with a timing of 9:35.64 minutes.

 

The old National Record stands in the name of her state-mate Surabhi Tipre who had clocked 9:42.16 in 2007. Two National record were broken in 4x200-meter relay races both by Karnataka boys and girls. The Group I boys’ quartet of Akash Rohit, Akhilesh Ram, Ajay A. and Saurabh Sangvekar posted a timing of 8:13.58 to set a new National record.

 

The previous record of 8:20.90 was created by Maharashtra in 2007.

 

While in the corresponding girls’ section, Arhatha Magavi, Sneha T, Divya Guruswamy and Pratima Kollali combined to clock 9:12.70 for the gold. They erased the previous mark of 9:23.29 set by Maharashtra in 2008.

 

Meanwhile, budding swimmer Himanshu Dhakad from Madhya Pradesh did the State proud as he clinched the first gold medal for the state in 50-meter backstroke. Dhakad won the gold medal by clocking a timing of 00:30:01 but failed to obliterate the National record of Sandeep NA who had clocked 00:29:86 seconds in 2004.

 

R. Vishak from Tamil Nadu finished second, while Akash Debnath from Bengal clinched the third spot. Other young swimmers from Madhya Pradesh also did not disappoint, as Rohit Imalia bagged a bronze medal in 50m back stroke in Group I, while Rohitash Dubey also bagged a bronze in 100m freestyle in Group II.

 

The defending champions Karnataka have garnered 327 points up till now with 15 gold, 12 silver and 15 bronze medals while Tamil Nadu (270 points, 12 gold, 13 silver, 10 bronze) and Maharashtra (259 points, 14 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze) are closely following the holders after the third day of the championship.

 

Delhi and Gujarat stood fourth and fifth in the medals tally with two and one gold each. Madhya Pradesh swimmers have won six medals with one gold, one silver and four bronze medals and are placed seventh in the medals tally.
