Maharashtra tops India's sugar production

Mumbai:
Maharashtra has topped the list of India's sugar-producing states
this year with a record 90.72 lakh tonnes, an official said here
Thursday.
The state is followed by Uttar Pradesh, standing a distant second
with a production of 58.83 lakh tonnes in 2010-11.
The other states in the top five list include Karnataka with 36.16
lakh tonnes, Tamil Nadu at 15.75 lakh tonnes and Gujarat notching
12.50 lakh tonnes, the official said.
Western Maharashtra's Pune, Ahmednagar and Kolhapur contributed
the largest share of sugar output followed by Nanded and
Aurangabad in Marathwada region, followed by Amravati and Nagpur
in Vidarbha (eastern part of the state) region.
There are a total of 168 sugar factories in the state, including
121 in the co-operative sector and the remaining 47 in the private
sector.
