Mumbai: One of the neighbors of the suspect in the 13/7 Mumbai blast who was picked by the police for questioning and died Sunday alleged police torture as the reason of his death.

"Faiz Usmani was picked up for questioning and tortured leading to his death", media reports quoted one of his neighbors as telling.

The police, however, denies the allegations saying the post-mortem will ascertain the exact cause of Usmani’s death.

“He was brought for questioning by the Chembur unit. He was suffering from hypertension and had not take medicines for the last three-four days. He was admitted to the hospital last evening and the allegations of torture by police are absolutely untrue”, Mumbai Police spokesperson Nisar Tamboli said.

Faiz Usmani was picked up as a suspect in the triple blasts, which left 19 dead and 129 injured, but late Saturday evening he suddenly took ill and was rushed to Sion Hospital. He died there 1.20 a.m. Sunday, the medical officer on duty said.

The officer said when Faiz was brought, his blood pressure was in excess of 220 points and there was a large amount of blood in his brain.

"We conducted all tests on the patient and it was a case of a massive haemorrhage," the medical official told IANS.

Faiz was the brother of Afzal Usmani, one of the prime accused in blasts in Ahmedabad and Surat, and both were suspected members of the Indian Mujahiddeen.
