Mumbai: Maharashtra's
opposition parties Saturday called off a shutdown scheduled for
Monday, after Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said the government
was open to providing housing to displaced mill workers in the
Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray, Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) leader Gopinath Munde and Republican Party of India (RPI)
chief Ramdas Athawale called off the shutdown.
"We shall resume the agitation if the demands are not met,"
Thackeray told reporters here.
Thousands of mill workers took part in a protest march Thursday
from Byculla in south-central Mumbai to Azad Maidan in south
Mumbai.
The chief minister has, however, ruled out providing free housing.
