Lucknow: A day after two lawyers were killed in a
clash, 35 lekhpals (revenue officials) were arrested and sent to
jail Sunday for their involvement in the violence in Uttar
Pradesh's Lakhimpur-Kheri district, police said.
The clash between advocates and lekhpals took place Saturday in
Mohammadi town, about 150 km from here. The 35 lekhpals were
detained soon after the incident.
Agitated over the killings, lawyers went on a rampage, vandalising
government offices and setting several vehicles afire.
According to officials, the clash was linked to an old dispute
between lawyers and lekhpals over registry of a land.
Police have recovered the rifle used by a lekhpal to fire shots
which allegedly killed the lawyers and injured five others.
Twentyfive live cartridges and four used shells were also seized.
The local bar association registered a case of criminal conspiracy
against Sub-Divisional Magistrate Hari Ram as well as Tehsildar
Rajnish Kumar.
Lawyers have also given a call for a statewide agitation on which
a decision would be taken Monday.
