Delhi gang-rape: Criminal case against Mail

New Delhi: Delhi
Police Monday registered a criminal case against five people,
including the publisher and editor of English tabloid Mail Today,
for disclosing the identity of the Delhi gang-rape victim, an
official said.
The others named are the printer, a reporter and a photographer.
According to Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat, the tabloid,
owned by the Living Media Group that also publishes the well-known
India Today weekly, carried the victim's name, photographs of her
brother and her southwest Delhi house in Mahavir Enclave.
"We have registered a case under Section 228(A) of the IPC (Indian
Penal Code)," Bhagat told IANS.
Section 228(A) bars disclosing the identity of the victim of
certain offences, including rape. Being a cognizable offence, it
attracts two years imprisonment.
The case has been registered at the Vasant Vihar police station in
south Delhi.
Mail Today Editor Sandeep Bamzai told IANS that he does not know
about the police case.
"I don't know anything about the case. I have not received any
police complaint," Bamzai said.
