Spurned, man shoots himself in Jaipur girls' hostel

Tuesday May 15, 2012 09:00:21 PM, IANS

Jaipur: Upset over a fight with his girlfriend, a 22-year-old man Tuesday shot himself with a gun in front of police officials inside the girls' hostel of Government Engineering College in Jhalawar, police said.

Lal Bahadur Singh had a tiff with his girlfriend who resided in the hostel, police said. He reached the hostel, fired in air and threatened the police officials with his gun before shooting himself to death, they said.

"Singh was a resident of Dholpur district and studied at a polytechnic college in Jaipur's Kotputali area," a police officer, who did not want to be named, told IANS.

He said the man barged into the hostel, around 330 km from Jaipur, in the morning.

"As soon as he entered the building around 11.30 a.m., he started firing in the air. He had come to see the woman with whom he had a relationship but who had started to ignore him. However, the woman was not in the hostel that time," said the officer.

Hearing the shots, the panicked hostel inmates rushed out of their rooms and informed the police. Senior police officers, including the superintendent of police, rushed to the spot.

"Singh hid himself inside a room in the hostel and kept threatening people not to come closer for nearly two hours. He said that he would kill the policemen and then himself," he said.

"Later, the woman also arrived at the hostel. He accused her of ignoring him and then shot himself in the head around 1.30 p.m. He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital," the police officer said.
