Malappuram
(Kerala): The first batch of Haj pilgrims from Kerala,
Lakshadwep and Mahe left for Saudi Arabia from the nearby Karippur
International airport Saturday.
The 300 pilgrims were seen off by Minister of State for External
Affairs E. Ahamed from the airport here.
The state Haj Committee had selected 9,825 pilgrims from 49,403
applicants from Kerala, Lakshadwep and Mahe to Jeddah this season.
The committee for the first time has
also provided an ATM and a SIM card to each pilgrim.
Karippur is the embarkation point for the Hajis of Kerala,
Lakshadweep and Mahe.
There will be two flights on the inaugural day today, HAJ sources
said.
The pilgrims would travel by Saudi Airlines, which will operate 32
flight services till Oct 20.
