Punjab NRIs to get 10 percent quota in projects, plots

Friday April 05, 2013 07:06:00 PM, IANS

Chandigarh: Announcing its aim to make Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) equal partners in Punjab's development, the Punjab government Friday announced a comprehensive plan to reserve 10 percent quota in projects and plots in the state for them.

Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal Friday said the new industrial investment policy being notified by the state government would have 10 percent quota in industrial plots for the Punjabi Diaspora. He said the NRIs had been demanding this for investing in Punjab.

"All new colonies of urban development agencies would also have 10 percent quota in residential plots for NRIs," he announced after reviewing the implementation of promises made to NRIs at the two-day NRI conference in the state January this year.

He said that Punjab is the first state in the country to make registration of marriages by NRIs mandatory to curb fraudulent marriages by them. He said that there have been scores of instances of NRIs leaving behind innocent brides in the lurch.

Badal said the Punjab Human Smuggling Act has been notified to check frauds on innocent youth by illegal travel and immigration agents in the name of sending them abroad.

"I have issued strict instructions to Punjab Police to launch a concerted drive against such agents, so that they could not destroy the life of innocent youth," Badal said.
