Thane: The toll in Thursday evening's building
collapse has shot up to 29 as rescuers scrambled through the night
to save people feared trapped under the debris, an official said
here Friday.
Police spokesperson Digamber Jangale said 59 people have been
injured.
The condition of at least eight of the injured is serious, a Thane
municipal corporation official said.
Friday morning, rescuers extricated five minors alive but injured
from the debris, as hundreds of onlookers cheered the rescue
effort.
The survival of the children was seen as something of a miracle,
as they were recovered nearly 12 hours after the building crashed
at 6.30 p.m. Thursday.
Police have lodged cases against the developers of the
seven-storey building, Salil Jamadar and Khalil Jamadar, who are
reported to be absconding along with their families.
Officials said that the building was raised within four months,
and has been functional since December. So it stood barely four
months.
As a precautionary measure, another adjacent building also
developed by the Jamadars was evacuated Thursday night.
Top police, fire brigade, civic and disaster management officials
were present at the scene of the tragedy as relief operations
continued Friday.
