Mumbai:
An indefinite curfew has been
imposed in Udgir - the Marathwada town some 60 kms from Latur,
after communal clashes between two communities broke out on
Saturday.
Trouble began in the town in the
morning a t around 09 a.m. when a
procession allegedly taken out by the VHP, Shiv Sena and Bajrang
Dal activists turned violent, local residents said.
The procession was taken out to
condemn an alleged move to hoist 'green flag' atop the Shahi Qila.
It is learnt however that no such
incident had taken place and the news that the green flag had been
hoisted on the Shahi Qila was a rumor.
Latur Superintendent of Police
immediately rushed to the town where curfew has been imposed to
control the situation.
Eyewitnesses said that the
protesters allegedly belonging to the VHP, Shiv Sena and Bajrang
Dal who were part of the procession were shouting inflammatory
slogans.
When the procession reached the
areas dominated by the Muslim community, it started pelting stones
and damaging the properties. Gulzar Hotel, Welcome Juice Centre,
Royal Juice Centre and Shareef Tea Stall were selectively
targeted.
"At around 09 in the morning, we saw
a mob that was shouting slogans and forcing the shopkeepers to
down their shutters. Sensing the trouble, we also closed the
hotel. However, the mob barged and attacked us with lathis", said
Mujahid Hasmi, an injured.
He alleged that the police personnel
were mute spectators as the violent mob attacked him and the
others.
Besides Mujahid, five others of his
family members were also injured in the attack by the violent mob.
Communal situation in Maharashtra
has deteriorated in the last few months with violence taking place
in various parts of the state with regular interval.
