Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh): Less than a monthe after more than 60 children died due to shortage of oxygen at Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital in Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's constituency Gorakhpur, over 40 children have reportedly lost their life at the same hospital in the last 48 hours.
According to reports, 07 children have died due to encephalitis while varying reasons have been reported behind the death of other infants.
The former principal of college Rajiv Mishra and his wife were arrested on Tuesday for questioning in connection with the deaths of over 60 children.
They had gone underground with their phone switched off after the case was registered against them.
Encephalitis is a sudden onset inflammation of the brain.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s Lok Sabha constituency of Gorakhpur has seen at least 114 deaths due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) this year alone.
AES is an umbrella classification under which comes the diseases Japanese Encephalitis (JE), water-borne encephalitis and scrub typhus, among others. As an MP, Yogi Adityanath had actively raised the issue, according to Indian Express.
The hospital has a special ward for patients of encephalitis. The children who died were admitted in three wards at the hospital.
