Junaid Lynching

The key accused in Junaid lynching case has been arrested from Dhule in Maharashtra. The accused, whose identity has not been revealed by the police, has confessed to stabbing the teenager.

“The key accused, arrested in Junaid Khan case from Dhule, has confessed to his crime. We will be presenting him in court on Sunday”, police said.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) said in a statement that a team was sent to Dhule after they received a tip-off that the accused was hiding there.

“We have arrested the accused from Sakri in Dhule district,” SP Government Railway Police (GRP) Kamaldeep Goyal said.

16-year-old Junaid, a Hafiz who had memorised entire Quran, was beaten and later stabbed to death in a running train while he was returning to his native village after Eid shopping in Delhi. Junaid's brothers and cousins who were accompanying him were also mercilessly beaten by a mob which also hurled communal slurs against them.

Narrating their ordeal, Junaid’s brothers said the attackers had taunted and repeatedly called them “anti-nationals” and “beef eaters”.

The police had on Monday offered Rs. 2 lakh for any information that could lead to the killer.
