Gorakhpur Children's Deaths: Uttar Pradesh STF arrests Dr Kafeel

Dr. Kafeel Khan, a pediatrician and in-charge of the encephalitis ward at Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College, who was earlier seen as a hero for saving lives of many children amid more than 60 deaths in two days, has been arrested by the Special Task Force of the UP Police.

After the deaths of over 60 children between in the hospital, Dr. Kafeel had emerged as a hero, who according to initial media reports tried his best to arrange oxygen cylinders for children by paying from his own pocket.

Later, the UP government removed him from his post after his name was included in the list of accused in connection with the deaths of children.

After being arrestedon Saturday by the UP STF from Gorakhpur, Dr. Kafeel was handed over to the Gorakhpur Police for further questioning.

Reportedly, Dr. Kafeel was also accused of stealing oxygen cylinders from the government hospital for his private clinic.

Dr. Kafeel is the third accused so far to be arrested by the UP STF after former college Principal Dr. Rajiv Mishra and his wife Purnima Shukla.

Gorakhpur Court had on Friday issued non-bailable warrants against Dr Khan and six others. All the seven persons - Kafeel Khan, Manish Bhandari, Uday Pratap Sharma, Sanjay Kumar Tripathi, Satish, Sudhir Kumar Pandey and Gajanand Jaiswal - have been accused by the state government of many irregularities and lackadaisical attitude, which finally led to the death of children, allegedly due to paucity of oxygen, between August 7 and 11.
