Mumbai: Soon after Ajit Pawar resigned as Deputy CM, Devendra Fadnavistoo resigned as Maharashtra Chief Minister, he announced in a press conference Tuesday.
BJP had won 105 seats in the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections whereas its alliance partner Shiv Sena had won 56 seats. Difference between the two alliance partners however emerged on the CM post and 50:50 power sharing.
While announcing his resignation as Maharashtra CM, Fadnavis strongly slammed Shiv Sena for its "attitude".
"After Ajit Pawar's resignation it became clear that we don't have numbers. I am going to Raj Bhavan to tender my resgination after this press conference", he said while addressing the press conference.
The latest development in Maharashtra politics came hours after Supreme Court asked Fadnavis to prove majority on Wednesday.
Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar had taken oath respectively as CM and Dy CM early in the morning on Saturday. They took oath of their respective offices even as Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress had announced on Friday that they will form the government in Maharashtra.
The Supreme Court of India earlier in the day ruled that floor test in the Maharashtra Assembly should be videographed and using open ballotting by 05:00 pm Wednesday.
The Supreme Court also said the entire proceeding should be live tele-cast. "New MLAs will be sworn in by 5:00 pm and the floor test will take place after that", said a three-judge bench.
Ajit Pawar resigned as Deputy Chief Minister about an hour before Devendra Fadnavis. Ajit Pawar resigned after senior NCP leaders Praful Patel, Chagan Bhujbal, Dileep Valse Patil and others met him at an unkown location in Mumbai.
The NCP leaders told Ajit Pawar that he should resign as Dy CM because all NCP MLAs except him are with the party.
Reacting on the SC verdict, Former Chief Minister Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan said the verdict came on the Constitution Day and it makes it more important.
"The SC verdict is praise worthy. Devendra Fadnavis should resign", he said.
Dada Bhuse, Malegaon MLA, also hailed the SC verdict and said, "The SC verdict is a gift to the nation because it is delivered on the Constitution Day."
