Why Protest Against CAA and NRC

Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in the habit of accusing opposition parties and others for wrongdoings without substantial grounds. While doing so he ignores the fact that we are living in a Digital World where every word - uttered today or in the past, is video recorded.

He also ignores the fact that as Prime Minister he should be careful with his speeches since each word he says is analysed, verified and checked.

Still, on various occasions in the last six and half years, on national as well as international platforms, he has uttered and claimed many things which were later turned out to be wrong and false claims.

Narendra Modi should note that his speeches that are laced with false claims have denigrated the prime minister's post. Its other result is that there are very few people left in India and abroad who now trust and believes in his words.

Yet, he chose to adopt the same "tricks" (if they are really are) to slam the people who are opposing Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). Addressing a rally in New Delhi on Sunday December 22, 2019 while responding to anti-CAA and NRC protests he said there have never been any talk on the two anywhere in the past.

His speeches unleashed a flood of video clips on TV channels and social media where not only Union Amit Shah nut President Kovind can be seen talking about CAA and NRC.

Prime Minister also said there is no detention centre anywhere in India. However, there are detention centres in India and Amit Shah claimed on a number of occasions that all "ghus-petias" should be driven inton detention centres after NRC.

Union Minister Amit Shah has not said this once, but he repeated this in many of his speeches and interviews. Moreover, the way he named the religions in his list for which he has planned CAA and NRC is clearly intimidating and provoking for Muslims. His gestures are enough to prove who is inciting Muslims, Yet PM Modi said the opposition parties are spreading lies to provoke Muslims.

Despite all these video evidences and facts, Prime Minister Modi continues to accuse the Muslims of being misled and being carried away by 'CAA myths'. But, he forgets to realise the fact that as long as these speeches of Amit Shah's are there nobody will believe him.

The only option left for him therefore is to withdraw the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) or amend it to replace the list of selected religions from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh to "persecuted minorities from the neighboring countries".
