Britain, US talked of toppling Saddam in 2001

Baghdad (Iraq): Former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein's cousin Ali Hassan al-Majeed, also known as Chemical Ali, was executed Monday, CNN quoted Ali al-Dabagh, an Iraqi government spokesman as saying.

Chemical Ali was hanged after having been convicted on 13 counts of killings and genocide, he said.

Al-Majeed had been sentenced to death in four separate trials, including one that focused on his involvement in a poison gas attack against Iraqi Kurds that allegedly had killed about 5,000 people.

His execution had been delayed for political rather than legal reasons. It is not clear what change, if any, led to the reported execution.

Ali was always at Saddam’s side since he came to power. He was made the Governor of Northern Iraq in 1987.

Later, the US-led allied forces invaded Iraq and dethroned Saddam Hussein from power. The government that took shape in Iraq after the killings of thousands of innocent Iraqis finally executed Saddam Hussein on December 30, 20006. This was the time when Muslims world over were preparing to celebrate Eid al Azha - the Muslim festival known for sacrifice and millions of them were at Makkah to perform Hajj.
