Khairlanji case hearing to begin today: Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court will start hearing the appeals filed by eight convicts of the Khairlanji Dalit killing case from today. A division bench will comprise of Justices A P Lavande  .... Read Full

Nagpur: The much-awaited verdict in the Khairlanji killings, in which four members of a Dalit family were killed by a mob in a village in Vidarbha, was deferred by a month by the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court today.

The judgement has been deferred as one of the judges on the two-judge division bench before whom the hearing is taking place, is pre-occupied with an assignment at the Mumbai bench of the court. The bench consists of Justices A P Lavande and R C Chavan.

Justice Lavande said in his chamber that the verdict was being deferred to July 14 since Justice Chavan was in Mumbai.

While the death penalty handed down to the accused by a lower trial court has come before the High Court automatically for confirmation, the bench is also hearing an appeal by the convicts against their punishment.

Four members of a Dalit family - Surekha Bhaiyalal Bhotmange, her daughter Priyanka and sons Sudhir and Roshan - were killed on September 29, 2006, over a land dispute in village Khairlanji in Bhandara district in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. Six people were sentenced to death and two awarded life imprisonment by a Bhandara court on September 24, 2008.

The CBI has appealed against the lower court's order dropping charges under Atrocities Act for lack of evidence and for enhancement of sentence of two life convicts to death. The defence has appealed against the trial courts verdict, sentencing six accused to death and two to life imprisonment.
