Thane (Mumbai): Former encounter specialist Ravindra Angre, presently under suspension, was arrested by the Thane police yesterday on charges of threatening the brother of a Thane builder, who had filed a case against him in 2007.

Angre, who was produced before the Thane magistrate, was remanded to police custody till June 18.

The victim Mahesh Wagh escaped bid on his life last night and had to be admitted to the Thane civil hospital, where he is recovering, police said, adding some unidentified person opened fire at him in which he was wounded.

A year after Angre was released from prison after he was arrested in connection with a case of extortion and threats to a builder, he finds himself embroiled in a similar controversy. Mahesh, who escaped a bid on his life last night when an unidentified gunman open fired at him, suspects that Angre was behind the attack.

Mahesh was returning home on his bike when he was hit on the shoulder by a bullet at 2215 hours. He was rushed to Thane Civil Hospital and though out of danger, he has been kept under observation. Builder Ganesh Wagh had filed an FIR against Angre at Naupada police station in October 2007.

Wagh's complaint said that he barged into his office, threatened him, made him sign the papers, beat him up and left in two of his vehicles, which were later found abandoned.

However, police officials refused to comment on Angre's involvement. Police said ''Officers have gone to the spot and are investigating the case.''

Interestingly, the Waghs have not kept a clean sheet either. A number of cheating cases have been registered against the two brothers with Ganesh facing arrest last month.

After a complaint was filed against Angre in 2007, he was untraceable but surrendered in February 2008 after the Thane police sought to prosecute him for contempt of court in response to Wagh's fresh application.

It took five more days for the orders to reach the Thane central jail, where he was lodged. He was released from the prison in May 2009 after being there for more than 14 months.
