New Delhi: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) today announced the launch of several new programmes in Participatory Development.

The programmes were launched in collaboration with Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), an NGO.

Announcing the launch, IGNOU Vice-Chancellor V N Rajasekharan Pillai said, ''We have launched these courses in response to the need for quality human resources in the development sector.'' The first batch commences from July next month.

''These are being offered in the country for the first time and combine theory with practice and field placement in country's most renowned NGOs,'' Pillai added.

The University is providing Masters in Participatory Development, Advanced Diploma in Participatory Development, Post-Graduate Diploma in Participatory Development and Post-Graduate Certificate in Participatory Development. Students can opt to complete the programme in stages.

Successful completion of the first semester would make the students eligible for PG Certificate in Participatory Development, the second semester would make them eligible for PG Diploma in Participatory Development, after semester three, they would be eligible for Advance Diploma in Participatory Development and semester four would make them eligible for MA in Participatory Development.

The courses are being offered by IGNOU's Centre for Extension Education.

The fieldwork in first year would engage students in facilitating participatory planning, participatory training or undertake multi-stakeholder engagement around a given development issue. The field engagement in second year is a participatory research-based project related to a problem or theme of participatory development.

Candidates possessing a Bachelor's Degree in any discipline are eligible to apply and there is no age bar.

The programmes are also being offered in the distance mode.

The last date for submission of filled application forms is July 31 next month.

The Handbook and Prospectus can be obtained for Rs 200 cash at the office of Centre for Extension Education, IGNOU and Rs 250 by registered post.

The prospectus can be downloaded at www.ignou.ac.in.
