NGOs across the country awarded

Saturday, September 18, 2010 08:02:04 AM, IANS

New Delhi: NGOs across the country adhering to best practices in resource mobilisation, accountability and transparency were honoured at the "India NGO Awards 2009" here Friday.

Salaam Baalak Trust, a Mumbai-based NGO providing a holistic programme for street children, won the small NGO award with an annual budget under Rs.50 lakh.

India Foundation for the Arts that supports arts and culture and Calcutta Rescue - which provides free medical care, education, and work opportunities to more than one lakh people in various states, were the joint recipients of the award in the medium category having an annual budget between Rs.50 lakh and Rs.5 crore.

Amongst the large NGOs having an annual budget of over Rs.5 crore, Development of Humane Action (DHAN) Foundation was the winner.

DHAN supports scalable, cost effective and sustainable innovations that enable poor and vulnerable people to become self-reliant.

The event was organised by the Resource Alliance in association with The Rockefeller Foundation.

"If the people working in the social sector enter politics, they will be able to transform the lives of a large number of people," said Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Mukul Wasnik.

"These NGOs are working silently in the country and an award like this gives them the recognition they truly deserve. Problems like female foeticide, illiteracy and unemployment could be addressed more effectively if these NGOs start working closely with the government," he added.
