Professor removes Muslim student's veil, arrested

Saturday January 08, 2011 07:23:07 PM, IANS

Ranchi: A professor of St Xavier's College was arrested here Saturday after members of the Muslim community demonstrated against him for removing a female student's veil, police said.

Father Imframe Bage had removed the veil of Neha Parveen, who was participating in the student protests against fee hikes in the college campus Friday, a police officer said.

Bage, while trying to pacify the students, wanted to ascertain the identity of the students and removed Neha's veil.

Members of the Muslim community demonstrated at different places in Ranchi Saturday, blocking roads and attacking shops. Protesters also burnt tyres at two places.

Commuters faced difficulties as the roads were blocked at four busy areas.

Police resorted to baton charge to disperse the demonstrators at one place.
