Farooq lifts 39th J&K chess championship

Srinagar: Faisal Farooq has won the 39th Jammu and Kashmir State Chess Championship while Mohaib Ahmad bagged the under-25 title during the six-day long event which concluded here amid much fanfare.

Mohaib secured first position in the under-25 category while Nayeem Shafi was the winner in the under-19 category.

Aazim Rashid (under-15), Hyder Mushtaq (under-11) and Syed Rozal Sajjad (under-9) were the winners in other categories yesterday, an official spokesman said.

Mehroz Sajjad, the youngest player in the tournament at six years, emerged as the winner in the female under-9 category while Zaraib Ashai (under-15), Salah Rashid (under-17) and Muneera Bashir (under-19) lifted the trophies in their respective sections, he added.

The winners will represent the state at National and International Chess events this year, the spokesman said.
