Sunday September 11, 2011 07:45:56 PM, IANS

For three decades, this sculpture stood in the plaza f the World Trade Centre. Entitled "The Sphere", it was conceived by artist Fritz Koenig as a symbol of world peace. It was damaged during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. It is placed few blocks away from the Ground Zero as a temporary memorial.

New York: A memorial service began Sunday morning at the National September 11 Memorial - the site of the destroyed World Trade Center - to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sep 11, 2001 terror attack.

US President Barack Obama, former president George W. Bush and other officials joined family members of the victims of the terror attacks at the reflecting pools, which were built over the towers' footprints, Xinhua reported.

The ceremony, expected to last over four hours, will pause six times -- twice to mark the times when each of the twin towers was hit and twice to mark the times when each tower fell. The other two pauses will mark the times when the Pentagon was hit and when Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

After the first pause, Obama read a passage from the Bible. Then families of the victims started reading the names that have been carved in stone at the reflecting pools.

After the second pause, Bush read out a letter by Abraham Lincoln to a mother whose five sons were killed in battles.
