Washington:
A Hawaiin
fish has adapted the same set of muscles to climb steep waterfalls
and to eat algae as well.
The Nopili rock-climbing goby is known to inch its way up
waterfalls as high as 100 meters by using a combination of two
suckers; one of these is an oral sucker also used for feeding on
algae.
Richard Blob and colleagues from Clemson University, California,
who filmed jaw muscle movement in these fish while climbing and
eating, found that the overall movements were similar during both
activities, the journal Public Library of Science ONE reported.
"We found it fascinating that this extreme behaviour of these
fish, climbing waterfalls with their mouth, might have been
co-opted through evolution from a more basic behaviour like
feeding," said Blob, who led the study, according to an university
statement.
