Malegaon: After being denied permission to visit Malegaon and hold rallies for over two years now, senior Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leader and Telangana legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi finally got police permission to enter and address a rally in the city.
Owaisi Jr, who will reach Malegaon today morning, will offer Friday prayers at Bada Qabristan Masjid, where a huge crowd is expected to gather and meet the MIM leader. On September 08 in 2006, a series of blasts inside this mosque had killed more than thirty people.
Local MIM chief Rizwan Batterywala said Akbaruddin Owaisi will also offer prayers for the 2006 Malegaon blast victims buried in the Muslim cemetery in the Bada Qabristan.
“Besides praying for the blast victims and kick-starting his party campaign in the city by addressing a rally at Ansar Jamatkhan in the heart of the city Friday evening, Akbaruddin Owaisi will also lead a road show the next day i.e. on Saturday”, he said while talking to ummid.com.
“MIM candidate Abdul Malik will file his nomination papers on Saturday, and Akbaruddin Owaisi will lead the procession from the MIM office in Islamabad to Malegaon SDM office in Camp”, he added.
The MIM plans to contest on 60 seats in Maharashtra, and have already declared the names of six candidates. The MIM leaders also say, as against the general perception, the party is not working on any communal or hate agenda in Maharashtra.
“We are working for the development and upliftment of the under trodden belonging to all minorities and other backward classes. We are contesting the election with the same agenda”, Jafer Husain Meraj, MIM observer and Narapally MLA said.
This will be Akbaruddin Owaisi’s first visit to Malegaon. In the past, Akbar Owaisi, and his elder brother and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi both were denied permission by the Nashik police to enter Malegaon.
Two months before in Ramadan, when Asaduddin Owaisi entered the city, he was stopped at Manmad Chowphully and was allowed to enter only after he signed an undertaking that he would not address any public meeting.
Owaisi brothers are known for their fiery speeches. Akbaruddin Owaisi was in fact charged and arrested for hate speech in January 2013. Ever since they made inroad into Maharashtra by winning 13 members in the Nanded civic elections held in October 2012, they were trying to consolidate voters in their favour. But, citing what the Maharashtra police termed as ‘provocative speeches’, they were not granted permission to hold rallies in the state.
