Mahathir Mohamad, Ahed Tamimi declared 'Persons of The Year 2019'

Mumbai: Malaysian Prime Minister and Prolific Leader Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Palestinian Protest Icon Ahed Tamimi have been respectively declared 'Man of The Year 2019' and 'Woman of The Year 2019' by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, Jordan.

The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, Jordan publishes every year a list of The World's 500 Most Influential Muslims. In its 10th edition released Monday, a copy of which is with ummid.com, the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, Jordan declared Mahathor Mohamed and Ahed Tamimi "Persons of the Year 2019".

"Twenty-five years after the signing and almost immediate betrayal of the Oslo Agreement, this is a time that is witness to the Trump-Netanyahu alliance kicking away the crutches of a defeated, but still defiant, Palestinian people. But, now after decades of setbacks and defeats - there is a hero on the field. Ahed Tamimi, the Palestinian teenager who dared to kick and slap an Israeli soldier. She is The Muslim 500 Woman of the Year 2019", the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, Jordan said.

"Ahed Tamimi slapped and kicked the Israeli soldier and the video made of that act of defiance went viral and raised the spirit of millions of Palestinians and the millions more across continents who grieve for Palestine", it added.

Announcing the selection of Dr Mahathir Mohamad The Man of the Year 2019, The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, Jordan, said, "The Muslim Man of the Year is Dr Mahathir Prime Minister of Malaysia - the second time he has served in this position - and at 93, Mahathir is now the world's oldest sitting head of goivernment."

"This quite extraordinary man has had a dynamic political career spanning 70 years and yet at the same time been the author of 17 published books. Aside from two memoirs, all of them are direct narrative responding to the immediate problems confronting Malaysian governance and economy, a concern often extended to Asia as a whole and the global economy and his plans for rectifying those problems", it added.

"Among rulers of those basically capitalist economies in the developing world, Mahathir Mohamd was the first to stress the necessity of government regulation and correctly alluded to a reading of Adam Smith that reconginzes Smith's own recognition of a role for government in economic affairs to have been of far greater importance for Adam Smith than many advocates of total free market economies prefer to acknowledge", it said.

Besides announcing the Persons of The Year 2019, the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, Jordan has also published the list of World's 500 Most Influential Muslims. On top of this list is Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan followed by Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz and King Abdullah II of Jordan respectively on the 2nd and 3rd position.

Among the top 50 in the list are King Mohammed VI of Morocco, Mohammad Taqi Usmani of Pakistan, Dr Ahmed Mohamamd Al-Tayyeb of Al Azhar, Sheikh Salman Al Ouda of Saudi Arabia, Sayyid Ali Hussein of Najaf Iraq, Ali Khamenei Supreme Leader of Iran, Sultan Qaboos of Oman, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of Indonesia Joko Widodo and President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari.

Erdogan was ranked 8th in 2016 and 2017, and 5th in 2018 whereas King of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud continues to rank among top 03 Muslim leaders.
