New Delhi: Dr. Shama Parveen, Assistant Professor at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) was conferred the coveted “Sayeeda Begum Women Scientist Prize 2018”.
The award, instituted by Jamia Hamdard and which included included Plaque, Citation and Cash Prize of Rs.01 lakh, was presented to her by Vice-President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu at the Convocation Ceremony of Jamia Hamdard held on 23rd October 2018.
This award is given annually in the memory of the Late Mrs. Sayeeda Begum, wife of Late Hakeem Abdul Hameed, founder of Jamia Hamdard.
The award aims to recognize the academic contribution of women scientists working at Jamia Hamdard or any other recognized minority institution of the country. The women scientists working in the areas of basic and applied research encompassing biosciences, biotechnology, biomedical, pharmaceutical and environmental sciences are eligible for the award.
Scientific contributions of the candidate during the last 5 years are evaluated for the award by eminent juries.
Dr. Shama Parveen is actively involved in research in the area of Molecular Biology of human viruses. Her research interest focuses Dengue, Chikungunya, Zika and respiratory viruses (human metapneumovirus, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus). Her publications in the journal of international repute have been well received.
The award reflects her significant contributions in molecular analysis of human viruses and their evolutionary trajectories. Her studies are envisaged to be useful for possible containment of viral epidemics.
