Vancouver:
Top seed Sania Mirza squandered a one-set lead as her march for a
second successive ITF title was halted by local favourite Stephanie
Dubois in the summit clash of the Vancouver Open here.
Sania was ahead after the opening set but could not carry the
momentum and went down 6-1, 4-6, 4-6 in the final of the 75,000
dollar event yesterday.
The Indian ace, chasing her second successive ITF title following
her victory at Lexington a couple of weeks ago, looked set to go for
another championship win as she broke her rival four times in the
first set.
Both the players struggled to hold serve in the match but it was
Sania who ended up paying more for the mistakes as Dubois raised her
game just in time.
If it was Dubois who struggled in the opener, then they both did in
the second, as five consecutive breaks of serve saw the local lass
emerge narrowly ahead 3-2.
Dubois saved a couple of break points in the sixth game to finally
hold serve for the first time in the match to decisively pull ahead
4-2.
Sania dropped her serve again, for the fourth time in the second set
to give Dubois a 5-2 advantage. Sania saved a couple of set points
on her rival's serve to pull back to 3-5, and finally managed to
close the gap within one game at 4-5.
However, Dubois made the double break count as she came up with the
goods when she really needed them, to hold serve and take the match
into a deciding third.
The world no 129, Dubois carried her momentum into the final set,
breaking Mirza for the sixth time in the match to pull ahead 1-0,
and then consolidating the break to lead 2-0.
Sania fought back to make it 2-2 before an amazing run of four
consecutive holds saw both the girls locked at 4-4 in the decider.
Backed by a small home crowd, Dubois broke Sania one last time to
pull ahead 5-4, and served out the match to win her first title in
over two years.
For her runner-up finish Sania walked away with 6,080 dollars, while
Dubois toook the winner's purse of 11,400 dollars.
