Urdu scholars converge
at University of Hyderabad for Meet-the-Author program
Wednesday, August 19, 2009 06:53:45 PM,
Express News Service |
Hyderabad:
There has been a considerable academic buzz surrounding Urdu study
in the City universities of late, especially with the Maulana Azad
National Urdu University coming up with exclusive programmes in the
language. Not willing to be left behind, the Department of Urdu at
the University of Hyderabad has been organising a set of linguistic
and culturally significant programmes though its last academic year.
The latest installment came in the form of the visit of eminent Urdu
scholar, author and teacher Abdus Samad, who interacted with the
students and faculty of the university on Tuesday.
Organised in association with the Sahitya Akademi, the programme was
initiated “in order to enhance the perception of recent writings in
Urdu by a contemporary writer among academics and enthusiasts, while
enabling the scope for exchange between disparate geographical
regions,” said Head of the Department of Urdu, Baig Ehsas.
Samad, who teaches Political Science at Magadh University in Bihar,
is a prolific writer. Having penned five novellas and a number of
short stories, the academic-turned-author concerns himself with a
range of issue, that include identity, expression and society. His
novel ‘Do Gaz Zameen’ won him the Sahitya Akademi Award, while many
of his works have been translated into Indian languages and English.
The Urdu Department has been organising seminars and meets, some of
which also involved collaboration with foreign universities as well
as local centres of learning, like the MANUU. Sources at the
University indicated that as part of its activities, it would be
organising a programme with the Department of Mass Communication on
the recent trends and applications in the language.
