Rashad Hussain: US serious in developing relations with Muslim world

Patna: US President Barack Obama's visit to India later this year will take bilateral relationship between the two countries to a new level and demonstrate how both were working together to find solutions to pressing global challenges, US special envoy Rashad Hussain said here today.

Hussain said that the Indo-US relationship will be further strengthened with the return visit of the US president to India in November.

As a special envoy to the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), Hussain, who was born in Bihar, said he sought to "deepen and expand the partnership that the US has pursued with the Muslims around the world."

Hussain said the US president was a firm believer that "Islam rejects terrorism and our President has made it clear time and again."

He said that the US was interested in undertaking a number of schemes for the development of the minorities, particularly the Muslims.

He said the US President was in favour of ending the war in Iraq and Afghanistan in a responsible way and hence the US government had decided to withdraw 50,000 US troops from Iraq from next month.

The process of withdrawing troops from Afghanistan will commence from next year, as stated by the US president, he said.

Hussain was appointed as special envoy to the OIC, that has 56 nations as its members and second largest international body after the United Nations, on February 13, 2010.

He was speaking to reporters at the American Corner, opened recently here on the the campus of a private educational institute, IIBM.
