Bhopal: About six hundred junior athletes from six Indian states will flex their muscles for top honours in the 22nd National West Zone Junior Athletic Championship starting here in Bhopal at the Tatya Tope Stadium on Wednesday morning.


Addressing a Press conference here on Tuesday Mumtaz Khan, Hony. Secretary Madhya Pradesh Athletics Association, (MPAA), said that the three-day athletic championship shall be held on August 11, 12 and 13.


Mumtaz informed that athletes from the states of Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and hosts Madhya Pradesh will be seen in action to vie for 169 golds, silvers and bronze medals that will be at stake. The Athletics Federation of India has given the responsibility to MPAA to organize the championship at Bhopal. He said the competitions will be held in the age groups of 20, 18, 16 and 14 years separately for boys and girls.


Replying to a question he said the athletic championship would be declared open by Madhya Pradesh Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Energy and Mineral Resources Rajendra Shukla, who will be the chief guest at the inaugural function. Lawmaker Dhruv Narain Singh, chairman Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation, will preside over the inaugural function.


He told a questioner that the state team winning maximum gold medals shall be awarded overall championship winners crown while the team standing second in the gold medal tally would be given runners-up title. In the four age groups viz. 20, 18, 16 and 14 years athletes garnering maximum points shall be presented “Best Athlete Trophy” in each group.


Mumtaz said athletes coming first and second in the competitions will be selected for the West Zone Athletic team which will participate in the National Inter-Zonal Junior Athletic Championship to be held next month from September 3 to 5 at Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.
